Marriage: What Is It Good For?

Kudos to the Supreme Court yesterday ruling correctly that equality is a constitutional right under the law, and not something to be argued about and applied willy-nilly.
I know I’m just whispering to the wind, but it is important to keep this point going forward: This fight has never been about religion. Marriage in this country is not restricted to a specific religious sect or group, and likewise, it is not defined by a specific group.
So why bother at all? Because, and here’s the really important thing to get:
There are over 1100 benefits , rights and protections provided on the basis of marital status.
Everything from death/survivor benefits, estate planning, social security benefits, immigration law, inheritance…the list goes on and on.
Those are the rights that were fought for. This was never about having some bigots bake a wedding cake.
Again, thank you to the five Supreme Court Justices who saw through the right-wing bullshit and applied the principles of the law to all:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
